What the Kerala Migration Survey 2023 says about students
The most detailed public picture of this market is the Kerala Migration Survey 2023, initiated by the state's Department of Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs (NORKA) and conducted by the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation. It covered 20,000 households in all 14 districts.
What matters to anyone recruiting students:
- Kerala's emigrants are estimated at 2.2 million, close to 2.1 million in 2018, and the report credits rising student emigration with keeping that level steady.
- Student emigrants roughly doubled, from 129,763 in 2018 to about 250,000 in 2023, with some leaving as young as 17.
- Of international students above 16, over 80 per cent went abroad after completing their graduation in Kerala. The United Kingdom ranked first, then Canada, then other European Union countries: one student in four chose the UK and one in five Canada.
- Among female emigrants, the most common occupation was nurse or nursing assistant, at 51.6 per cent.

Ernakulam, the district around Kochi, sends nearly one in five of Kerala's student emigrants, and Kottayam has an even higher share of emigrants who are students. Thrissur is close behind on volume, and Kannur sends more students than Kozhikode or Malappuram.
Malappuram is a different market: it was the origin of 377,647 emigrants, the most of any district, with Tirur taluk alone at 109,133. With students only one emigrant in 25 there, a study enquiry is more likely to come from a household that already knows migration through work. Kozhikode sits between the two patterns, while Thiruvananthapuram district has the third-lowest student estimate in the state.
