Indian families and schools across the GCC
The Ministry of External Affairs' diaspora figures, dated January 2026, give the size of the Indian market in each country. The Kerala column comes from the Kerala Migration Survey 2023; the total row is our own sum.

That is about 27 per cent of the 37.3 million overseas Indians the ministry counts worldwide. The mix is uneven: Kuwait has more Indians than Qatar, yet Qatar holds the larger share of Kerala's emigrants.
India's missions describe the school picture in the four countries covered here:
- Oman. The Embassy of India in Muscat says 22 Indian schools offer the CBSE curriculum to more than 48,000 Indian students, under one Board of Directors.
- Qatar. The Embassy of India in Doha counts 19 Indian schools, about 45,000 Indian school students and a little more than 1,000 Indian students at Qatar's universities.
- Kuwait. The Embassy of India in Kuwait lists 25 Indian schools.
- Bahrain. The Embassy of India in Bahrain lists eight CBSE-affiliated schools, each running from KG to Class XII.
CBSE's first regional office outside India opened on 2 July 2024 inside the Consulate General of India in Dubai. Gulf nationals are a separate market with their own funding rules: Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education, for example, took registrations for its 2025–2026 scholarship programmes from 1 July to 30 September 2025, and its Amiri programme funds top school leavers at 24 top-ranking universities worldwide and five local ones.
The Kerala–Gulf family link
The Kerala Migration Survey 2023, run by the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation with the International Institute of Migration and Development across 20,000 households, finds:
- GCC countries hold 80.5 per cent of Kerala's emigrants, down from 89.2 per cent in 2018, a shift the report links to student migration to non-GCC countries.
- The UAE is the most preferred destination and the country that 36 per cent of return migrants came back from.
- About 4.2 lakh cases of family migration, where homes stood locked because whole families had moved.
- Of the international return student migrants the survey counts, 86.4 per cent came back from GCC countries, and 49.1 per cent were studying after their return.

Routes Gulf families ask about
Two Government of India schemes are written with Gulf workers' children in mind, and both run on documents.
DASA and the CIWG quota. The DASA 2026 information brochure, for undergraduate admission to NITs, IIITs and other technical institutes, reserves one-third of DASA seats for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries. The CIWG countries are the UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and a parent must be working, or have worked, in one of them on any date in 2026. Applicants upload the parent's passport, a visa and a work permit valid in 2026, and an employer certificate. CIWG seats carry first-semester tuition in rupees; other DASA seats are billed in dollars.
The Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children. The SPDC guidelines for 2025–26 offer 150 undergraduate scholarships a year for study in India, with 50 earmarked for children of Indian workers in Emigration Check Required countries, a list that includes all six GCC states.

Two clocks and two weekends. The UAE government's fact sheet puts the UAE 4 hours ahead of GMT, an hour and a half behind India, and says its government offices close on Saturday and Sunday. The Indian embassies in Doha and Kuwait City, by their own websites, close on Friday and Saturday.
